The leadership trait I showed was Resilient because I was honest and strong when things got boring, The CARE value I showed was Active Thinking because I was Actively thinking when I got bored.

Reading - Evaluate Texts

Evaluate Texts Blog Post template

In reading we have been learning to….Apply some criteria to evaluate texts e.g accuracy of information and presence of bias.

We have been evaluating texts against the following four criteria:
  1. Readability
  2. Accuracy
  3. Relevance
  4. Quality of language/ information.

These documents show evidence of my learning during this unit:

  Describing Authors Purpose

 Criteria to Evaluate texts

Evaluating A Range of texts

My Next Step: Is to continue to apply this new knowledge and evaluate texts as I read them, checking for readability, accuracy, relevance and quality of language/ information

Extended Abstract Task- Maths

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

Please complete these two problems. You will need to explain how you got the answer.

Question 1
In our household, there are twice as many cats as humans, with sixty legs in total.

How many cats are there to be fed? 12
6 + 6 =12 human legs
12 x 4 = 48 cat legs
48 + 12 = 60

Question 2
Three men run a business together.
The proportion of the profit they each get at the end of the month is based on the proportion of the funds they have invested in the business.
The April profit is shared out so that Al gets one third, Bob gets one half and Chuck gets one sixth.
In May, Des joins the group, investing half as much as Bob invested.
What share of the profit can Des expect to get?
Al= ⅓ 2/6
Bob= ½ 3/6
Chuck= ⅙

Des= ¼

Help out around the school #1

                            Help out around the school

Today Brook and I were wanting to help out around the school so we went up to Mr Rush and asked if he needed any help, he said yes, and if at lunch time we could meet him outside the staff room and we can go around the school and pick up all the cabbage tree leaves and the flax that has come off the bushes, so we went and got some bags and gloves and went around and picked up the tree leaves and the flax, and a bit of rubbish and made the school a better environment and Brook and I did it for about a week. The leadership trait I showed was Active Thinker because I was trying my best to help make the school a better, healthy place. The care value I showed was  cleaning up after others and help out with what I can.

Current Events Term 2, 2017

WALT: I can successfully research a current event.
Here is a link to our online modelling book for this unit of learning.

The National Standard that I have been aiming for during this unit of learning is:

  • Year 7/8: I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.

Each week we have read a short text about a current event/ topic. We then formed questions based on what we had read.  After this we researched the answers to our questions and finally we gave our opinions on what we had found out.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

My Next Step is to continue to apply the reading and research skills that I have learned in a variety of other areas.

Careers Education C.V. Writing

In CAREERS EDUCATION we have been learning to write a skills based Curriculum Vitae.

A skills based C.V. focuses more on the skills that we have,  rather than our work history.

Here is a link to our online Modelling Book that shows the process we have followed.

Three things that I have learned about writing a Curriculum Vitae are:
  1. I learnt that you have to write a C.V for a new job.

  1. You need to have more than one reference to get the job.

  1. Always write the truth about yourself.

Here is a link to my Skills based Curriculum Vitae. Link to my C.V

Term 1 Novel Study

Term 1 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel fat four eyed and useless

I found this novel interesting because it had great characters and features to the story.

During the novel I had to complete two major assessment tasks. The first is an Explain Map which shows the consequences of a major event in the book. The second was a Describe++ Map (Inference map) which shows I how I have connected prior knowledge and other experiences to what I have been reading to make an inference.

National Standard this covers

  • Year 7/8  Standard
    • using several pieces of information to make inferences
using their prior knowledge, along with information in the text, to interpret abstract ideas, complex plots, and sophisticated themes
    • I can use a range of strategies, such as inferring, to work out more complex words.

Current Events Term 1

Current Events Term 1

In Current Events I covered these topics:
  • The design of the Halswell Skate Park and I made a submission to the council.
  • Donald Trump’s Refugee Plan
  • Christchurch Earth Memorial
  • The new Ngā Puna Wai Sports Facility
  • The Red Zone and Avon River Regeneration Plan with a submission to the council.

My favourite topic was the Red Zone because It was interesting about what happened in the earthquakes.

Here is a link to my learning on the Red Zone and Avon River Regeneration Plan.

The Reading National Standards I have achieved are
  • Year 7 and 8
    • Identifying and resolving issues that come from competing information in texts
gathering, evaluating, and synthesising information across a small range of texts
    • I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.

Monday, 20 March 2017

In writing I have been learning to:
  • use all basic punctuation independently
  • attempt more complex punctuation (eg semicolons, colons, parentheses)

I have been especially focussing on using parentheses and commas. I have highlighted these in green where I have used them as well as other punctuation that I changed because it was used incorrectly. Here is a piece of my writing that shows this. Leadership Article

Games with minimal or no equipment.

In PE we have been participating in a variety of games that require little or no equipment.
Below is the Matrix which shows our progression in this unit of learning.

Screen Shot 2017-03-12 at 12.32.06 PM.png

The table below shows my understanding of games with minimal or no equipment.
(Fill this table in, in as much detail as possible. )

Examples of Games that need minimal or no equipment.
What equipment would we usually need to play these games.
Why do we play games with minimal or no equipment?
If we don't have enough time to get the gear we can just play a game with minimal equipment.

My Strengths.
Some things that I have done well during this unit of learning are having fun with no equipment because it is easier to play games.

My Next Steps.
Some things I could improve on when playing games with minimal or no equipment are getting equipment before I start Because then it doesn't take much time.
